My workplace doesn’t have a shower

Of course, it’s great when workplaces do have shower facilities (when your home boiler breaks) but the lack of a shower at work shouldn’t be a barrier to cycling.Lots of people make the mistake of confusing the sport of cycling (like the Tour de France) with everyday cycling for transport (getting from A to B). If you’re cycling short distances without major hills, you’d be surprised at how little effort it requires. Even on very hot days, cycling is great because you create your own breeze which you don’t get when walking or when the car air conditioning breaks. In countries such as Denmark and The Netherlands (where the Summer climate is similar to Worcester), you don't see commuters in Lycra. It is normal to dress for your destination, whether that be overalls, a dress, or a suit. If you’re a business owner or manager, consider having a relaxed dress code that will allow employees to wear comfortable clothes to work.Temperature in Netherlands and EnglandTips to help:

  • Consider buying panniers or a basket rather than wearing a backpack, so you don't get a sweaty back
  • Get the right bike for your use. E.g., an upright bike will be more relaxed than a road bike for a commute
  • Take a drink to keep hydrated
  • A step-through frame is more comfortable for wearing suits, dresses and skirts
  • An e-bike will make cycling much easier, even up Rainbow Hill or the London Road

Pick a quieter route that avoids the worst of the motor traffic. If you're not having to compete with motor traffic, it's easier to go at your own pace and the commute will be more enjoyable. We recommend using https://cycle.travel/ for route planning as it's specifically designed for cyclists.Practice your route on a day you're not working to see how much time you need. If you plan your time and you're not rushing, you're far more likely to arrive fresh and relaxed.
