Close Pass Map

Often cited as the biggest barrier stopping people travelling by bike is the risk posed by other people driving motor vehicles. Whilst the vast majority of people driving do so legally and considerately around people riding bikes, it is frustratingly common to witness illegal and dangerous driving, with illegal overtaking, or close passes, being a common incident that are of particular concern.

For several years West Mercia have accepted 3rd party reporting via their Operational Snap portal, and regularly take action against drivers performing close passes. Each incident is reviewed by an officer, with possible outcomes of either a warning letter to the driver, or a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) which results in an educational course or a fine.

Following a number of meetings with West Mercia Police over the last few years Bike Worcester have undertake to map all 3rd party submissions by Bike Worcester volunteers. This provides a body of evidence that can be used by West Mercia, Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council to identify hot spots, and to then take preventative measures, for example changes to street furniture, road design, signage or speed limits.

The Close Pass Map can be viewed above. This will be periodically updated as more submissions are made and added to the map.
